Republican platform previews Middle East
Republicans left their convention in Milwaukee unified around the ticket of former President Donald Trump, who was the target of an assassination attempt on July 13, and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, author of the bestselling book "Hillbilly Elegy."
As Elizabeth Hagedorn reports, the Republican platform, only 16 pages this year, was light on Middle East policy. It expressed support for Israel and efforts to bring peace to the region, resurrected a ban on immigrants from five Muslim-majority countries and promised to deport foreign pro-Hamas agitators.
Speakers at the convention also talked up the need to restore a credible deterrent and take a more assertive approach in dealing with Iran as well as how the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, would never have happened on Trump’s watch.
