A Syrian army officer was killed in a suspected Israeli drone strike in south Syria on Wednesday amid deepening regional tensions over the war in the Gaza Strip.

A Syrian military source cited by the state-run SANA news agency said Israeli drones struck two military sites in the southern provinces of Daraa and Quneitra, killing an officer and causing material damage.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said an Israeli drone hit two sites belonging to the Syrian army’s Brigade 112 in the Saida village between the countrysides of Daraa and Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The organization, which has a vast network of sources on the ground in Syria, said a lieutenant who is close to the Lebanese Hezbollah group was killed in the attack.
