Iran and Russia, both facing growing sanctions by the West, have deepened their relations in the past year.

Iranian President Ebrahim al-Raisi arrived in Moscow on Thursday, according to Iran's envoy in Russia, amid the burgeoning ties between the two countries.

Raisi is holding a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin. The two heads of states will not make any statements to the press, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran before his departure to Moscow on Thursday, Raisi said his one-day visit will focus on efforts to halt the fighting in the Gaza Strip, ensure the flow of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave and secure the Palestinians’ legitimate rights.

He said he will also discuss ways to advance Russian-Iranian relations in various fields.
