Israel’s attacks on Gaza hospitals could amount to war crimes, says HRW

Human Rights Watch says the ongoing Israeli targeting of hospitals across Gaza “should be investigated as war crimes.”

As the Israel-Hamas war rages on in the Gaza Strip, heavy Israeli bombardment is devastating hospitals in the besieged enclave in what rights groups say could amount to war crimes.

“The Israeli military’s repeated, apparently unlawful attacks on medical facilities, personnel and transport are further destroying Gaza’s health care system and should be investigated as war crimes,” Human Rights Watch said in a Tuesday report.

“Even the threat of an attack or minor damage can have massive life-or-death implications for patients and caregivers,” the leading rights group added, calling on Israel to immediately end its attacks on hospitals.

Israel launched a massive offensive against the Gaza Strip in retaliation for Hamas’ cross-border attack on Oct. 7 that killed around 1,200 people. So far, Israeli airstrikes and ground operations have killed more than 11,000 people and injured over 28,000 others, according to the latest figures from the Hamas-run Ministry of Health. Over 1 million Gazans have also been displaced, according to UN figures, with thousands sheltering in schools, hospitals and houses of worship.
