Turkey arrests US citizen over selling passport, state media says

The State Department said it was aware of the detention of a US citizen but denied he is a diplomat.

After Turkish media reported that an American diplomat was arrested in Turkey last month on suspicion of selling a fake passport, the US State Department on Wednesday denied that the detained individual is a US diplomat. 

“We are aware of the detention of a U.S. citizen in Turkey,” a State Department official told Al-Monitor in emailed comments. “We are providing appropriate consular services.”
