Live Updates: White House calls Iran attack against Israel 'defeated and ineffective' as Israel vows to retaliate
Israel has vowed to retaliate after Iran launched around 200 ballistic missiles at the Jewish state Tuesday night on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. The Iranian attack followed Israel's killing of Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group, as well as an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps deputy.
Projectiles were seen over Amman, Jordan, moving toward Israel, as all Israeli residents were instructed to stay in bomb shelters.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the attack marked a "significant escalation." He added, "We have made clear that there will be consequences — severe consequences — for this attack, and we will work with Israel to make that the case.” Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder said that "two US Navy destroyers, the USS Cole and the USS Bulkeley, fired approximately a dozen interceptors in close coordination with Israeli forces."

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said "do not enter into conflict with Iran" in a post on X following Iran's attack against Israel.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced late on Monday that it had begun a limited ground invasion in southern Lebanon to clear Hezbollah from south of the Litani River, marking the first such Israeli operation in Lebanon in 18 years.
