Iran launched over 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday night on the eve of the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah, following Israel's killing of Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia group, as well as an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps deputy.

Projectiles were seen over Amman, Jordan, moving toward Israel, as all Israeli residents were instructed to stay in bomb shelters.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday promised retaliation for the killing of IRGC Deputy Abbas Nilforoushan, saying that his killing "will not go unanswered."

A US official told Al-Monitor prior to the attack on Tuesday that the US is "actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack. A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran."

Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced late on Monday that it began a limited ground invasion in southern Lebanon to clear Hezbollah from south of the Litani River, marking the first such Israeli operation in Lebanon in 18 years.
