Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar on Friday after his Tehran death in an attack blamed on Israel. A funeral procession in Iran preceded the one in Qatar, where Haniyeh’s body will be buried.

The funeral took place as fears of regional war grew on Friday and as Israel braces for retaliation from Iran and Hezbollah. US President Joe Biden called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reaffirm Washington’s support for Israel’s security but also pressed Netanyahu to accept a cease-fire.

“We have the basis for a cease-fire,” Biden told reporters. “He should move on it and they should move on it now.”

Biden said the assassination of Haniyeh had “not helped” the negotiations.
